Cholera hits Haiti

Haiti has suffered a lot due to the earthquake which struck it in January this year. Millions of the peoples are still to return to their homes; they are living in overcrowded tents. A recent report by the Haiti Health ministry stated that around 140 people have recently died due to cholera.

They said that though the exact cause of Cholera is still not known, most of the health experts think that it was due to the drinking of polluted water from the nearby canal. More than 1000 patients are hospitalised due to the same disease as well.

Thousands of people were seen outside numerous local hospitals; they had drips attached to their arms and were lying on the streets. It was sad to see all these patients being treated in that manner; you can’t really blame the hospital authorities as well because the hospital was full to brim. The Government of Haiti is taking all the necessary steps that it can to ensure that cholera doesn’t reach those camps where earthquake affected people are living.

Health ministry has already said that if it would reach these camps, the death toll due to cholera is going to increase dramatically. None of us wants to see any more people die in Haiti especially when we have already seen more than 250,00 people lost their lives. All of us pray and urge the international community to aid in fighting against cholera in Haiti.
