Sam Champion, the weather editor of ABC news and weather anchor of “Good Morning America” has lost his father.
According to the ABC news, Lt. Col. James H. Champion died last night at his home in Houston, Texas.
Jim Murphy, the senior executive producer of “Good Morning America” has issued a statement via email to his staff. He wrote,
“After a life of service to his country and his family, Lt. Col. James H. Champion, US Marine Corps (retired), passed away last night in Houston Texas. He was better known to us as Sam Champion’s dad. Sam, his mom, Sylvia and his sister Teresa was together with the Lt. Col. At the end.”
James was born in Paducah, Ky on 26th December 1934. He joined Marine Corps in 1953 and served in Hawaii and Japan.
He was retired from active duty in 1962 and he was hired by Southern Bell telephone.
He also participated in Dominican Republican operations in 1965 and he was designated on USS Simon Lake as Security Officer then he was deployed in support of ballistic missile submarine nuclear deterrent patrols in Holy Loch, Scotland.
He also served in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969. Champion also participated as a rifle company commander in a combat operation at Khe Sanh. He completed his tour as a team leader of Combined Action Program and he was decorated with a Bronze star, the Presidential Unit Citation and the Combat Action Ribbon.
