Tariq Aziz, the one of the most prominent remaining of Saddam Hussein and the international face for many years under Saddam has been ordered death sentence in Iraq.

Aziz, the former Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and very close advisor of Saddam Hussein has been sentenced to death by the Iraqi court.

He was convicted in relation with the maltreatment of religious parties.

74 year old was previously charged for his involvement in execution of several merchants for profiteering.

The Iraq state television told that “the Supreme Criminal Court issued an execution order against Tariq Aziz for his role in eliminating religious parties.”

The state television has also reported that two other persons, Sadoun Shakir, former interior minister and Abed Hamoud, former private secretary to Hussein have also been sentenced to death.

Saddam, a Sunni Muslim did everything to establish competitor political groups in 80s and 90s and he specifically targeted the Shia community including the party of current Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki.

Dadee Izzar Aref, the lawyer of Aziz has stated that the decision is politically motivated and he further said that we are discussing the options to take the next step but decision about an appeal has not been made yet.

The Iraqi experts are saying that the decision death sentence is just an attempt to divert the attention of the people from the Wikileaks facts that have been revealed recently.
