The very words coming to our mind after watching Charla Nash are miraculous, inspirational, courageous and of course adorable for the reason that Charla might have lost much of the physical beauty according to the beholders but she has not lost the hope-the only instrument which kept her alive after she was badly disfigured by a pet chimpanzee.
Single mother from Stamford, Connecticut, Charla Nash became victim of the berserkness of a 14 year old male champenzee Travis. She was trying to catch her boss’s escaped pet ape when the champ attacked her leaving her terribly disfigured. The champ ripped her lips, eyes, both hands and major portion of her once beautiful face.
A 20 hour operation earlier this year gave her new face and she was part of the documentary series of the Extraordinary People of Britain’s Channel 5 this Thursday where she said, ‘A lot of people tell me I look beautiful and I never had anyone tell me that before. ‘I look OK now and I don’t have to worry about scaring anyone.’
She was however disappointed about the failure of her hand transplant but showed her usual optimism saying that it might be successful one day.
Bohdan Pomahac, who is one of her doctors, said it would be a gradual recovery.
‘Nine months to a year is typically when they can control the face and smile,’ he said.
Her twin brother Mike Nash said: ‘I saw her and I said “wow”. It’s amazing, the miracles of science.’
Charla Nash is determined to lead a normal life and she said: ‘I think in the beginning, I always wondered “why me?”
‘But then again, my whole life has not been easy but I never gave up.’
The life changing operation was carried out in May. A team of more than 30 surgeons, nurses and anesthetists at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, led by Dr Bohdan Pomanhac, painstakingly rebuilt her face.
